John McLachlan is
Professor of Medical Education and Director of Undergraduate
Medicine at the Queen s Campus of Durham University,
Stockton, UK, and was formerly Director of Phase 1 at
Peninsula Medical School.
Previously he was a member of the Scottish Medical Deans
Curriculum Group, which developed The Scottish Doctor
curriculum. His special interests lie in assessment, anatomy
teaching, and medical arts and humanities. He has been
teaching undergraduate medical students since 1975, and isn t
fed up with it yet. In 2003 he was awarded a National
Teaching Fellowship for his work in medical education. He
currently serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Pregnancy
and Birth and advises the General Medical Council on
assessment and revalidation.
He has an unusual background, covering both quantitative
research in human embryology and qualitative research in
education and arts. His work with the artist Helen Storey
resulted in a major exhibition ( Mental ), at the Institute
of Contemporary Arts in London.
